Riding On Report Spring 2022

Hello wonderful Members,
Donations since last report by Member and then Branch:
G Gardiner $105, B Ridley $70, D Scott $200,

Branches: $66.30 Torrens Valley, $4574.19 Great Southern, $
16.00 RV Group Tasmania, $700.00 Gloucester, $1000.00 Orange, $225.00 RV Group Myrtleford, $1000.00 Shearwaters, $500 Tamar Tourers, $250.00 Upper Hunter, $202.50 Esperance, $500.00 Bunbury.

For the eagle eyed, this adds up to nearly $10k in 3 months
which is amazing as it is a traditional QUIET time for us as with the colder weather, we tend to just ride on RIDE DAYS and not do too much outside. Again, every single CENT is appreciated and used towards seeking a cure.

Riding On Report Winter 2022

Welcome to another committee year as members of this wonderful organisation called the ULYSSES CLUB. We have a new National Committee, and some new and exciting challenges ahead are in store for them and us.

The first exciting news is that I am in contact with our Sydney Researchers headed up by Meilang Xue of the Sutton Laboratory and she has put forward a proposal that continues the focused work of previous projects and has that continued dream of targeting Rheumatoid Arthritis and eradicating it from our society.

For those that made the S.E. Qld Rally, well done and I hope you enjoyed your time in the Greater Warwick region. Unfortunate that we had a rain burst for 12 hours the night before opening the gates, but we found out how many of us and how long it takes, to relocate an entire TENT City. Thank you to the ones that had come early to volunteer because that Monday morning certainly would not have happened as well as it did without all available hands working as one. An apology to the rally goers about the announcer of the event, it was yours truly. Yep, somewhere along the line I had agreed to do some announcing for the rally event but from Monday morning my focus was changed by circumstances, and I became the travelling microphone. P.S. the showgrounds PA system is designed for the centre arena only and we were using it as an entire ground system. It was cranked up to MAX and was in danger of overload, so we did what we did with what we had.

From my roaming around the grounds for 5 days I got to chat to many, many people from all over Australia. Without exception, they all were ULYSSIANS through and through. Happy to be there and wanting nothing more than that. The most important thing for me is that the majority knew about UCARF and what its aim is. For the others, by the time the rally was over, the UCARF flag had been flown high by a lot of the volunteer team and people reminded of its importance to the CLUB.

Now to the donations since last report by Member and then Branch (which are many):

Mike Abberfield $90, David & Christine Smith $250, Kristi-Anne Hill $15 and a Bequeath from Keith Greenland $300.

Branches: $500 Port Macquarie Mid North Coast, $115 Tweed Border Branch, $45.50 SEQ Branches, $500 North West Tasmania Coast, $300 Torrens Valley, $800 Newcastle Lower Hunter, $335 Redlands, $80 Canberra, $300 Hills, $283 South Coast, $200 Central Victoria, $500 PMMNC, $3680 2022 Rally
Warwick, $75 Hills, $250 Echuca, $200 Mandurah, $453 Blue Mountains, $750 Ballarat Central, $1,000 Alice Springs Central Deserts, $500 UCARF Patch Campaign, $121 Southern Cross Tourers, $131 Macedon Ranges, $1,048 Melbourne.

On the note of contributions, the members that are using UNITED PETROLEUM have, by 2c each litre, donated $2523.00. Not a bad effort and that shows how many litres we can burn through in a year. Remember some important sayings, “It is not the size that matters, just the fact it is being done.”
Or
“It is not the brand you ride, but the fact that you ride”

Also, heartfelt congratulations to the Northern Beaches Branch (Jo DEARNLEY Award) and the Lockyer Branch (Good Joint Award) for their valuable donations and subsequent awards.

Each donation is gathered by Branches by various means and some take a while by holding many BBQ’s or the like and then others by regular things like TOY RUN’s, charity events each year. Whatever way it is decided to gather funds for UCARF, it’s appreciated and respected.

Now, have you a copy of and read the Ulysses Story? The story of the events leading up to the creation of our Club and events that formed it in such a way that only minor changes to its constitution and structure have been needed in the following years. It’s a fantastic read about Stephen and his mates as they came together to create the Ulysses Club Inc.

From each sale of the book, the profit made comes to UCARF and for a few years, I used to rent out my copy for a gold coin (or greater) to my local members with that money going to ‘you know where’…..

Please keep safe and healthy,

Riding On Report Autumn 2022

A happy NEW YEAR to one and all. I hope that the festive period of December and January wasn’t too strenuous. Mine was relaxing with family and some time away with my wonderful wife at Tin Can Bay.
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (or RA) I hear you ask? Well, it isn’t a pleasant thing to meet. A chronic inflammatory disorder affecting many joints, including those in the hands and feet. There are treatments to manage the pain etc but there’s NO CURE (currently). That’s where UCARF is assisting by funding research into finding one. Each test performed by our researchers is one test closer to finding that elusive cure or furthering treatment for suffering patients. Just remember that our bodies are like a lotto game, you could win on your first attempt, or it may take many years of trying to get the winning 6 numbers. Research is a lot more focused, but the odds are still great and thank goodness for percentages that each time they try another avenue, the odds are reduced in their favour.

Now to the donations as shown on my spreadsheet (I’ve put individuals first then branches):
Individuals: Mike Abberfield $47.00, P Butler $303.00, I had mentioned in the Spring edition that UCARF was getting a bequest from the late Trevor Woodhead estate of $10 000.00 and it arrived.

Branches: Newcastle $585.00, Yarra Ranges $1500.00, Hobart $731.90, St George Sutherland $1000.00, Macedon Ranges $200.00, Westgate Wanderers $250.00, Lockyer $3839.78, Sunshine Coast $162.30, Warnbro Sound Wanderers $200.00, Sale & District $500.00, RV Group Tasmania $224.85, UCARF
Patches $1250.00, Lake Macquarie $55.00, Mallee $250.00 Coffs Coast $750.00, Melbourne $600.00.

From previous months: Not the Rally, Rally $3000.00.
Explanation: Funds were already gathered for the MANDURAH WA Rally/AGM 2021 and a decision was made to pass to UCARF on behalf of ALL Western Australian Members that had helped prepare for the cancelled rally. A massive thank you to all of them and here’s hoping that they’ll get to use their newfound skills again soon.

I can’t thank everyone enough for the consistent contributions to UCARF. Even during the height of the world pandemic, you members are still finding ways to raise funds and contribute. For those that are off to WARWICK in April 2022 for the RALLY, please seek me out. I’ll be on site with my wife, Grace, (who happens to be CHECK IN Coordinator as well) so just ask for FOGGY and I shouldn’t be too far away.

The day prior to writing this, Grace and I met a lady, who’s begun suffering with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Mostly in her hands but is now spreading to other areas of her body and she’s been seriously struggling to find comfort from her specialist, as they do not fully understand RA. This lady is now transferrin to a new specialist in the hope that they’re more aware of the disease! Her eyes teared up when I identified as a ULYSSIAN plus the Coordinator for UCARF and what our fund is about. This lady could be a direct recipient of care when our researchers find out more about RA and how to treat it, and with a miracle and/or God’s blessing, cure RA.

Please remain focused on the BIG picture and let go of the small stuff as life is too short. An oldish saying or maybe I just made it up?: Hair today, Bald tomorrow.

Yours faithfully and see you at the SEQld Rally in Warwick.

Riding On Report Summer 2021

“Rheumatoid Arthritis” and Stephen Dearnley? What’s the connection? They were introduced when his dear wife, Jo, was diagnosed with the disease and sadly died from it. That began his mission to try and eradicate this insidious disease and his quest began by forming UCARF. Now this venture he knew wouldn’t be a quick one, but it had started, and inroads have been achieved since which is a major positive and proves again that one man’s vision can make a difference. A bit like our Ulysses Club I suppose!
The fund itself is doing pretty good thanks to good management by Kim Kennerson and his ability to liaise between the researchers and the Club to achieve targeted efficient research into rheumatoid arthritis specifically. We’re sitting with just under $90k in the bank all thanks to YOU. The fund exists entirely on donations from you, the members, and your generosity is at times a little overwhelming. I get to see many small donations (<$1000) coming through the bank account which is the majority. THEN we get donations from individuals that for their own personal reasons just plonk a few THOUSAND into the bank! These are the amazing people who enable researchers to keep on going. We then receive bequeaths of “Ridden On” members who have remembered UCARF in their wills. Even in death these people still make an impact on the living and leave a legacy for future generations.
Donations totalling over $4,000 received since the last report and in no order whatsoever:
There was a $2,000 donation that has flown under the RADAR since MARCH 21! A MASSIVE Thank You must go to the wonderful members of the Canberra Branch for their ongoing support. This Branch is a regular donor to UCARF and apologies for omitting them for the past few reports. Other donations are $315 Kevin & Jacqueline O’Donoghue, $20 Tim Hobson, $20 Max Hubbard, $200 Macedon Ranges Branch, $1000 Tamar Tourers Branch, $81 Mike Abberfield, $1000 G. Martin of Orange Branch & $200 Perth Branch.

There was a $3,000 deposit on the 10thof Sept but I’m still waiting on details of who this was from! PLEASE identify in the notes of the deposit who or where it is coming from! Don’t worry as we will spend it, but we do like to acknowledge and thank you for it. Or send a brief email to me or the National Office letting us know about it.
On a sad but grateful note, and we’re waiting on the final settlement of the will, we’ve been bequeathed an amount of $10,000 from a member of the Armadale Heritage Branch. This generous gentleman is Trevor Woodhead. I don’t know anything personally about Trevor, but I can tell you that he was a member who respected the Club immensely and all we stand for. And he was a man who liked to do things for others as donating to anything is a selfless act. Thankyou, Trevor, for your kind act and may you ride with your mates forever more. RIP Trevor.
This also would have been the year of the UCARF Raffle. You remember it, don’t you? Where we get a bike and/or gear from a supplier (hopefully for FREE) and get you to sell as many tickets as possible with a chance of winning yourself. Well, with the times we are living in, I got cold feet trying to organise it for this year with lockdowns etc. happening on and off, and, even the likelihood of the 2022 Warwick Rally/AGM being able to go ahead. Also, would members from other states be allowed to cross the borders. So, with that playing on my mind, I will be organising one for the Lismore Rally (Round 2) in 2023 and will be a showcase for the UCARF Raffle. I hope you appreciate that the last thing I was prepared to do was to expose the fund or club to a financial loss.
Stay safe over the Festive Season and enjoy each other’s company and your family.

Riding On Report Spring 2021

“Rheumatoid Arthritis” is a combination of words I do not wish to be said to anyone. Arthritis is bad enough in its other forms but with the addition of Rheumatoid just makes it that more deadly, hence why Stephen (Old #1) took on the task of raising funds for research through the Ulysses Club Inc. UCARF is the result! The following is a listing from May to the end of July outlining the generosity of members/branches across this vastland of ours and the desire from them to carry on the vision of Stephen Dearnley.

As all would be aware, we Australians have been under pressure as a nation with lockdowns, restrictions and fear of a virus that can strike without notice. This also has affected the club at not only local level bit in the National Office. If you haven’t received your Thank yous and receipts for donations, it is because the Ladies in the Office haven’t been able to get into it! And when they do, they must prioritise the critical from the really urgent then move onto the really must get it done categories. As you can imagine, sending a receipt IS important  but someone’s membership is of more importance! So please be understanding and a little patient when things slow down during these times we are currently going thru.

Donations received in no order whatsoever:

Melbourne Branch $500.00, Brisbane Branch $750.00, Tim Hobson $1000.00, SEQ Odyssey Taroom $2000.00, Orange AGM Rally $1236.00, Northern Beaches Branch $10000, Jen Woods $132, Mystery (Orange Branch) $200.00 + $192.00 + $1068.00, Shearwaters Branch $1000.00, Richard Bouchier $1000.00, Mike Abberfield $37.00, Newcastle Lower Hunter Branch $30.00, David Scott $200.00, Orange Branch $1000.00, Northern Gateway Branch $112.70, Wagga Wagga Branch $1000.00, Ulysses Patch Campaign $250.00.

The $10,000 donation by Northern Beaches Branch is particularly noteworthy. It was done at the Orange AGM but with the illness of Kim preventing his attendance and my nervousness of taking over UCARF it was completely missed On. The fact that it is of considerable value is not the reason for this notation but the why of the donation. A member made an announcement to his branch that UCARF was running shy of funds and he put forward money to be donated on their behalf. Greatest admiration. THANK YOU.

Outside the above dates I was made aware of a donation of $313.00 from members Jackie & Kevin O’Donoghue. It related to the cancellation of the RV Groups AGM at Cohuna. Instead of a refund, they requested a donation to UCARF. Again, THANK YOU.

The donations received from Ulysses Patch Campaign is a personal venture by Ken Eaton which is totally supported by the Club. His website is ucarf.com and there is a facebook site as well. Ken gives a great discount to those that purchase in bulk to sell through their branch as well. There is more to Ken than meets the eye, apart from sitting on our current National Committee, hop onto his sites and have a read of his profile and while you are there, it would be a great time to place an order maybe?

UCARF receives greatly varying values but the one most important thing to remember, is that ALL monies received are gratefully received and ALL monies help. Please keep on doing what you can in raising funds by activities like garage sales etc or by flicking a spare $ or 2 from your raffles to us as it quickly adds up to a powerful amount to fight the fight against Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Yours faithfully

Riding On Report Winter 2021

Is rheumatoid arthritis a big deal?
RA is a very serious autoimmune disease in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body’s tissues and causes severe joint pain, stiffness, severe fatigue and deformity.

The deformity is usually in the hands, shoulders, knees and/or feet. It attacks men, women and children of all ages and can lead to premature death.

The following donations from Ulysses Club branches and members have been received since the last published list in edition # 150 Autumn 2021. The list is in no particular order other than when received by the club.

Hobart Branch $497.40, Newcastle Lower Hunter Branch $700.00, Tweed Border Branch $400.00, Capricornia Branch $500.00, Burnett Branch $100.00, Nepean Branch $201.25, Daniel Towler $500.00, Warwick and Districts Branch $1,500.00, North West Coast Branch $500, Mike Abberfield, $25.00, Blue Mountains Branch $1,000.00, Phil Whitford $100.00, Mike Abberfield $35.00, Ken Eaton $725.00, Brisbane Branch $750.00, Gatton Branch $2,000.00, Mandurah Murray Branch $200.00. A little expansion on the donations, I was recently presented with a $1,000.00 cheque in person at my local branch meeting.

The Blue Mountains donation is significant considering the  very small size of the branch and one that is also struggling to survive.

Animals suffer from arthritis as do humans and member Phil Whitford who has a dog with RA followed up with a $100.00
donation in addition on the night to the Blue Mountains cheque.

A much more than pleasant quarter of donations from branches and members.

Naturally we struggled during the worst of the pandemic but it seems with increased club activity your generosity abounds. As the outgoing UCARF Coordinator a heartfelt thank you for your support now and in the past.

My intentions were to retire from the ex-officio position of  UCARF Coordinator in person at the recent Ulysses Club AGM in person at the recent Ulysses Club AGM in Orange. bronchitis put paid to those intentions. However, a continuing five week serious bout of acute bronchitis put paid to those intentions.

I have served the club for 24 continuous years in various roles including branch president, national committee, national secretary, national president and the last eleven as UCARF Coordinator. It’s time to hang up the hat and in the case of UCARF give another member a go at the challenge.

I have had my eye on a suitable replacement in recent times and felt I have identified a member with their head in the right place and a genuine interest and enthusiasm for the role.

With this in mind I recommended Ian (Foggy) Winter UC#53026 TM#59 to the national committee to take on the role and in turn received a strong endorsement.

In my last UCARF report I would like to introduce Ian to the members.

QUARTERLY RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS QU0TE:

It never occurred to me that one day I would be sick with rheumatoid arthritis and never get better.

Kim Kennerson
UCARF Coordinator,

A word from Foggy

Hello to all the Ulysses Club Inc members across Australia,
It filled me with both pride and dread when Kim approachedme about taking over the Coordinators role from him. He is a big man with even bigger fill and regardless of what I thought and doubts I have of my own ability, I knew I would say yes. The meaning behind UCARF has been with me from my earliest days with the club as I was fortunate to meet and chat with Ole #1 at the Newcastle AGM (my first) Extended Natcom meeting. He made such an impression on me in those few minutes that I had with him whilst waiting for Alexa to return from parking the car I knew I had found my forever club!
I received such an insight from Stephen on the clubs founding, UCARF and what it means. And the impressive part is that I had all this implanted into my head in minutes. Over the preceding years I have learnt that this man had a way about him and it seems that I received both barrels because look where I am now.

I am proudly aligned to the LOCKYER BRANCH in Queensland and I am hoping that a lot of you may have had to stand thru some of my speeches after the Grand Parades when the Jo Dearnley and Good Joint Awards are presented. The Lockyer Branch has the honour to have been presented both these awards multiple times for our contributions to UCARF thanks to our Annual Ipswich Toy Run and I have been pushed forward (didn’t take much either) to receive them on behalf of our Branch.

My journey with the Ulysses Club Inc started in 2009 by joining the Lockyer Branch and has been full of activity since then.
Welfare Officer, Secretary, President, Treasurer and Newsletter Editor. Coordinator of the Toy Run a few times and always on the committees of anything the Branch gets up to. In SE Queensland I’ve been involved with just about everything from the resurrection of the President Meetings (2011?), uniting of @18 branches in our Cartwheel rides and to the maintenance of our special Memorial Gardens at Somerset Dam for all Ulyssians and officiating the yearly service in September. A lot of these activities are beneficial to UCARF (along with other charities) and I feel it was meant for me to move into taking over from Kim with this focus.

In closing, I give you my promise that I will do everything I can to always promote UCARF during my tenure and will carry on the work setup by Kim and the University Researchers in seeking a cure/preventative to the “insidious” disease we know as Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Yours faithfully

Riding On Report Autumn 2021

In the last edition of Riding On we announced the winners of the Jo Dearnley Memorial Award and the Good Joint Award 2020.

I wish to draw members attention to an article in this edition from Lockyer Branch regarding their win of the Jo Dearnley Memorial Award.

The winners of the Good Joint Award for 2020 are the Wellington members of the Dubbo and Western Plains Branch.

As has been the practice for the last few years whenever they wish to present me (UCARF coordinator} with a donation cheque we meet up at a pre-arranged location.

The most recent get together was at O’Donoghues Irish Pub in Emu Plains at the foothills of the Blue Mountains.

After a hearty lunch I received a most grateful and very present the guys with their 2020 trophy and display the Good Joint Award Shield.

How these members raise this amount of UCARF funds in the middle of a pandemic is amazing.

The accompanying photograph features Phil Melhuish, Kim Kennerson and John Jannus holding the cheque, the trophy and the shield.

Unfortunately, Peter Ogden who is one of the three main players in fund raising was unable to attend due to other commitments.

The following donations from Ulysses Club branches and members have been received since the last published list in the Summer edition of Riding On 2020.

This list is in no particular order other than when received by the club.

Its very pleasing to note that number of donations have more than doubled in the last quarter with a total value rising from a

A much-needed boost to UCARF from some very supportive and generous branches and members.

Stephen Dearnley OAM.

It was a sad day when the Ulysses Club lost its founding member Stephen Dearnley in February 2012.

It’s also sad when one reads in the last edition of Riding On that Stephen has been labelled an egotist some nine years after his passing.

Disdain is my reaction from being targeted for defending Stephens integrity, I stand by my previous claim that Stephen was not an egotist, but rather a modest man.

Discussione Finito.

Thank you, Stephen, for giving us our club.

This is most likely my second last UCARF report as I am looking at retiring from the position of Coordinator at the next AGM after 11 years at the helm.

I have had my eyes on a more than suitable enthusiastic successor for a while now with an approval of the national committee.

My intent is to introduce this keen member who has a good club background in my next and last report.

Riding On Report Summer 2020

The Jo Dearnley Memorial Award and the Good Joint Award were scheduled for presentation at the proposed Ulysses Club AGM on September 26. However, like many other events, Covdid-19 put paid to that and as a consequence there are no more timely opportunities to publicly announce the winners of the awards for 2020.

As the Ulysses Club UCARF Coordinator I am proud to announce the winners are as follows –

The Jo Dearnely Memorial Award recipient for 2020 is Lockyer Branch.

The Good Joint Award recipients for 2020 is the Wellington members of the Dubbo and Western Plains Branch.

Congratulations to both and the club is not only proud of your fund- raising achievements but hugely grateful of your generosity for our great cause.

The Jo Dearnley Memorial Award shield [as pictured] has winner engravings since 1997 with space left for only one more. A new shield will need to be created for 2021.

The winners are as follows-

2001-Brisbane Branch, 2002-Brisbane Branch, 2003-Brisbane Branch, 2004-Gold Coast Branch,

2005-Hills Branch, 2006-Blue Mountains Branch, 2007 Warnbro Sound Wanderers Branch,

2008-Mallee Branch, 2009-Torrens Valley Branch. 2010-Bunbury Branch, 2011-Gladstone Branch,

2015-Lockyer Branch, 2016-Whittlesea Branch, 2017-Dubbo and Western Plains Branch,

2018-Lockyer Branch, 2019-Lockyer Branch.

I do not often brag but back in 1997 I was Nepean Branch president when we won the inaugural shield. However the

we may have caught everybody else napping.

The following donations from Ulysses Club branches and members have been received since the last published list in the spring edition of Riding On 2020.

This list is in no particular order other than when received by the club.

Northern Gateway Branch $300.00, Echuca Branch $1,000.00, Enterprises $550.00, Lower Murray Branch $500.00.

Congratulations Newcastle Lower Hunter Branch on your 25th anniversary, thank you for the celebrations invite and your continuing UCARF support.

The NLH post celebrations morning breakfast produced an vegetable shopping bags and donates the sales proceeds to UCARF.

Thank you very much Northern Gateway, Echuca and Lower Murray for your generosity in these lean pandemic times.

The UCARF Patch Campaign has been progressing along very nicely during September and October resulting in curator Ken Eaton depositing $550.00 into the UCARF account. Sales have slowed of late and I ask members to consider this modest purchase and support.

My order is on its way and I challenge all national committee members to follow suit if they have not already done so.

Details are in the last edition of Riding On or contact Ken and Chloe ken@ucarf.com.

I wish to pay my respects of the recent passing of the late Cam McDonald, past national secretary and life member and a lovely gentleman to boot.

Riding On Report Spring 2020

Regrettably the UCARF national biennial raffle has had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 virus pandemic. It is hoped that we can resurrect the raffle as soon as is practical.
A reminder that the Jo Dearnley Memorial Award and the Good Joint Award were scheduled for presentation at the Ulysses Club AGM September 26. The awards will be now be presented at the 2021 AGM in Mandurah.
UCARF is most recently the recipient of a $10,000.00 bequeath from the will of the late Gideon Schuman who ‘rode on’ in April 2017.
Gideon was a very active member of the club for many years closely associated with the Hills Branch and was well known in branch circles in Sydney and the environs.
Gideon was one of life’s eccentric characters and was very popular and much admired by fellow members, including myself.
His love of the club is evidenced by his $10,000 bequeath in his will to UCARF.
Unfortunately, the 3 year long, protracted and complex legal processes were very difficult and expensive, and I would like to acknowledge two members who were personally and financially burdened by those legal processes in securing the bequeath to UCARF.
As executors to Gideon’s Will, current Hills Branch President, Jon Uidam and former Hills Branch President, John Hickey were the players who brought Gideon’s wish to fruition.
This gift is greatly appreciated and very timely for the club with UCARF taking a big hit with the virus. Gideon would be very pleased.

The following donations from Ulysses Club branches and members have been received since the last published list in the winter edition of Riding On 2020.

This list is in no particular order other than when received by the club.

Melbourne Branch $500.00, Central Highlands Branch $250.00,

Mandurah-Murray Branch $500.00, Ronald Barber $50.00, David Scott $200.00,

Mid North Coast Branch $500.00.

Following the unfortunate cancelation of the Lismore Rally due to the virus a number of members chose to donate their fees to the club rather than receive a refund.

An impressive gesture on their part.

The national committee in turn decided these donations would be forwarded to the UCARF account.

The result is eight individual donations giving the fund a much-needed boost to the total tune of $755.00.

As the UCARF Coordinator I wish to express a heartfelt gratitude to all donors on behalf of the club, especially in these difficult times.
